The new version fixes two technical issues. The first one is the error code 3 (“The system cannot find the path specified”), that occured when you tried to restore your backup image after using your flash drive with the atv patchstick creator. Windows couldn’t detect the volume on the flash drive, resulting in an empty volume path. Locking this path failed and resulted in the error. This should be fixed with this version.
The second fix prevents USB Image Tool from restoring invalid images in device mode. A valid device mode image has to be multiple of 512. If that’s not the case, the write operation will fail with error code 87 close to the end of the process. To prevent this, USB Image Tool now checks, if the image file size is a multiple of 512.

Try WinImage for example. I’m planning support for USB hard drives in one of the next versions.
Cute tool found it useful for duplicating a usb key.
I did have one problem. I was trying to duplicate a USB stick which contained an vmware esxi 4 boot setup. I had to hunt through 6 sticks to find one that was actually slightly bigger than the source key.
Cheap usb sticks seem to vary an awful lot in the actual size they are.
Someway to not read all of a stick to image file might be useful in device mode ?
Or someway to not write all of the image to target ?
Version 1.55 has a truncate option, but it comes with some restrictions. Please read in the FAQ for more info.

Fehler:
Während des Rückspielens eines Images gibt es (manchmal?) plötzlich keine Anzeige vom Kopiervorgang – ich habe dadurch mehrfach den Vorgang neu gestartet und dann natürlich eine Fehlermeldung erhalten – bis ich erkannte das das Kopieren noch im Laufen war.
Das mit der Meldung bei Fertigstellung werde ich für eine der nächsten Versionen berücksichtigen. Das Verschwinden kann ggf. damit zusammenhängen: Wenn die Markierung für das Gerät in der linken Liste aufgehoben wird, wird auch nichts mehr angezeigt. Theoretisch könnten mehrere Operationen gleichzeitig laufen. Allerdings sollte beim erneuten Anklicken des Geräts auch wieder die Prozentanzeige erscheinen und auch die Buttons gesperrt sein. Eine genauere Fehlerbeschreibung, wie es zu der Situation kommen kann, einen neuen Vorgang auf einem noch aktiven Gerät zu starten, wäre hilfreich.

Fehlerbeschreibung:
Ich starte den Schreibevorgang – sehe 1-2 grüne Strichlein für den Fortgang.
Dann arbeite ich was anderes (nicht am PC) – komme etwas später zurück und sehe keinen Fortschritt (leeres Feld) wo vorher die Anzeige dafür war.
Denke – ist abgebrochen (???) und klicke nochmals zum Start für das Schreiben auf den Stick
Dann gibts Fehlermeldungen….
Ist der USB-Stick denn im linken Bereich noch markiert? Die Buttons für Backup und Restore sind also wieder frei? Die genaue Fehlermeldung wäre auch wichtig? Ich bekomme das problem nicht nachgestellt, selbst wenn ich absichtlich versuche, ein solches Problem zu reproduzieren.
Bei etwa 30% des Speichervorganges (auf den Stick) sieht man das Gewählte Laufwerk nicht mehr markiert und die Fortschrittsanzeige verschwindet. Klicke ich dann auf das Laufwerk, so erscheint diese Anzeige wieder. Bei etwa 60/70% verschwindet sie wieder…
Ich konnte die Fehler nicht mehr reproduzieren – ich habe aber manchmal sofort nach der Wahl der Image-Datei (für Restore) einen Fehler und muss von Vorne beginnen. (Laufwerk, Restore, Datei). Beim 2. oder 3. Mal funktioniert es dann …
Ich nehme mal an, dass ich das Restore neu starten konnte, da im Hintergrund (ohne Fortschrittsanzeige) der Vorgang beendet wurde und dies ja (derzeit) nicht erkennbar ist.
Wenn ich das nächste Mal über den Fehler (wie oben beschrieben) stolpere, dann sende ich die Fehlermeldung.

Q: How can I access the created image files without a physical USB device?
A: Various disk image software is capable of showing the content of an image. Personally I recommend WinImage (Shareware, http://www.winimage.com). Compressed image files (*.imz) are basically a zipfile with the raw image as a compressed file. You can rename and open them with any Zip-Utility to extract the raw image.
You can also restore it to any larger USB flash drive, but not an USB hard drive.
usbitcmd.exe is proving to be extremely useful. I have used it to automate the imaging of mass sets of drives. However, when the logged in user does not have administrator rights, it cannot write to the USB drive. Is there a way you can make this into a Windows installable service?
Based on what I know, I would have to split the app into the service, that does the i/o operation with elevated rights and a command module, which tells the service what to do. I guess I could do this in future versions, but I would have to get some more info on this matter.

well i’ve been using usb it to restore a 6gb img into a 8gb flash drive
it worked and the image is cool
howeverr after being done i format the flash drive it became 6gb only then after reformat using HP format tool it is back on normal size but it takes much more time to format and copy folders over to the flash drive anyhow to fix that thanks in advance

I have this question: do you know a free windows application that can safely convert ISO images to IMG and making the resulting IMG “good” for USB-IT? UltraISO for example creates an IMG image, but USB-IT says it is not valid in Device Mode.

Why the commandline executable usbitcmd.exe create a smaller image than the USB Image Tool.exe ?
I try whith 128MB flash. with:
USB Image Tool.exe : the image is about 128MB
usbitcmd.exe : the image is about 10MB

Maybe you are using different settings. Maybe device mode for one and volume mode for the other.

ich habe das Tool bei einem Kunden kennengelernt. Es ist wirklich gut. Er rief mich damit ich ihm erkläre was da steht. Denn er ist wie viele meiner Kunden aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum. Ist es nicht möglich auch diesen Kunden das Tool zugänglich zu machen ?? Z.B. mit einer Sprachauswahl………. .

do you know a software for mounting the usb image files to windows. I need it for comparison to sticks copied on other machines while the oroginal master is in unse there, so I have to mount the image only on the system

One suggestion if possible, When you image a USB pen drive it creates an image of the total capacity of the pen drive. When you restore a backup or image it turns the new USB pen drive into the same size as the original. ie a 2Gig backup turns a 8Gig pen drive into a 2Gig pen drive. Can your tool be changed to only image the boot structure and files allowing you to use this image on a larger USB pen drive without losing any capacity?

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it’s not that easy. I explained it a little bit in the FAQ. The boot record as well as each partitions header data contain size information. USB Image Tool does not know about files in an image file or on a flash drive, because it works on a more abstract level.

Can I use the USB image tools to copy and extract the USB dongle data? It’s like making a dummy on USB dongle as a backup tool if actual dongle is broken.
@balbir: I don’t think so. Dongles are afaik no mass storage devices.
